Are You Ready to Run Ads? Here’s 5 Signs Your E-Commerce Brand Is Ads-Ready
Running Meta ads before your brand is ready is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make as an e-commerce founder. And yet it happens constantly. We speak to founders every single week who tell us they "tried ads and it didn't work." And almost every time, the ads weren't the problem.
So before you spend a single penny on Meta, run through these five questions. If you can say yes to all of them, you're ready. If a few of them make you wince, you may need to focus your energy elsewhere first.
1. Do you have a product that's already selling?
Ads amplify what's working. They don't create demand from scratch. If you're not making organic or word-of-mouth sales yet, that's your signal to nail your product-market fit first. Paying to put a product in front of strangers when you haven't convinced people who already know you is a fast way to burn budget and lose confidence in a strategy that would have worked with better timing.
If people are buying from you without ads pushing them there? That's the green light. That's the momentum ads are built to scale.
2. Is your social profile up to scratch?
When someone sees your ad and taps through to your Instagram, what do they find? A half-finished grid? An outdated bio? Highlights that haven't been touched since you set the account up? Your profile is your storefront. A great ad drives the click, but your profile has to close the trust gap. If yours isn't doing that yet, sorting it before you start spending is non-negotiable.
Our Social Start Up service exists for exactly this. We get your profile optimised, on-brand, and set up to actually convert the traffic your ads are about to send its way.
3. Is your website is ready to convert browsers into sales?
Ads drive people to your website. Your website's job is to turn them into customers. If your product pages are slow, unclear, or just not convincing enough to get a stranger to hand over their card details, your ad spend is going to be doing a lot of heavy lifting for very little return.
Before you start spending, you need to check your conversion rate. Even small improvements to your product pages, like clearer copy, better imagery, a more obvious call to action, can completely change what your return on ad spend looks like.
4. Do you have a budget you can commit to consistently?
This one matters more than most people realise. Meta ads need time and data to perform. The algorithm needs to learn, creative needs to be tested and audiences need to be refined. That doesn't happen in two weeks.
If your plan is to run ads for a fortnight, see no instant results, and pull the plug, you're not going to get the outcome you're looking for. A consistent budget over a minimum of 90 days gives you real data, real learnings, and a real shot at scaling your sales.
5. Do you have strong visual content or are you ready to create it?
Meta is a visual platform. Full stop. The creative is arguably the most important variable in your entire campaign. Not just quality, but volume and variety too. You need a mix of short-form video, product photography, strong infographics and you need enough of it to test properly.
If your content library isn't there yet, that's completely fine. But it's worth getting right before you start spending. Inside our Sell Your Sh*t programme, we handle all of it, concept, shoot, edit, campaign, so you're not trying to pull together content at the same time as managing everything else your business needs from you.
So, are you ready?
If you said yes to all five, you're in a strong position and we'd love to talk. If a couple of them gave you pause, that's not a reason to wait indefinitely. It's a reason to get the right things in place first, so that when you do run ads, they actually work.
If you’re not sure where you sit, a Spark Session is a great place to figure that out. In 45 minutes we'll look at where your brand is right now, tell you honestly what's working and what needs attention, and help you map out the smartest next move.
And if you already know you're ready to go all in, Sell Your Sh*t is our done-for-you paid growth system built for e-commerce brands who are serious about scaling. Your creative, strategy, campaigns and optimisation are all handled. You focus on the product. We focus on selling it.
Tell us about your brand and let's see if we're a good fit.
